Mathematics
Homework Policy
Rationale
The Mathematics Department at
Armidale High believes that homework is an essential part of all
pupils' education. It gives them the opportunity to extend and
consolidate work done in class; it encourages them to produce
creative, reflective and investigate work independent of the
teacher; it also develops skills in personal organisation and a
sense of responsibility.
The Benefits
of Homework
Homework is valuable because it
:
Strengthens home school links
Allows for practicing,
extending and consolidating work done in class
Teaches students how to plan
and organise their time
Develops student's research
skills
Establishes habits of study,
concentration and self discipline which will serve
students for the rest of their lives
Reaffirms the role of parents
and caregivers as partners in education
Provides parents and
caregivers with insights into what is being taught in the
classroom and the progress of their children
Challenges and extends gifted
and talented children.
Homework works best when it :
Is appropriate for each
student's age and ability
Takes into account student's
commitments during out of school hours, such as sport,
part-time employment and home responsibilities
Takes into account technology
such as computers, E-mail and the internet without
disadvantaging those students who do not have access to
this technology.
Expectations of Students and
Rewards/Sanctions
It is expected that you will :
Be aware of the homework
policy of the Mathematics Department
Complete homework within the
given time
Seek assistance from
teachers, parents/caregivers if difficulties arise
Obtain Parents/Caregivers
signature on completed homework when this is requested
Ensure homework is of a high
standard and working shown
Organise your time to ensure
that enough time is given to complete quality homework on
time
Students may work with other
students, but presented work must be that of the
individual
In the Mathematics department
at A.H.S, you will be expected to:
Complete 3 assignments per
term, for which you will be given a week
In addition, you will have
Math's homework most nights when you have Maths, which
should take you on average 10-20 minutes to complete
Rewards
S.C.A.M. cards will be
rewarded for completed daily homework at the teacher's
discretion
A commendation certificate
will be awarded to students who have completed all the
assignments in the semester, on time, and to the best of
their ability
Sanctions
Non-completed daily homework
must be made up for in the student's own time
Persistent non-completion
will result in a detention
Failure to attend detention
will result in the student being placed on a discipline
level within the A.H.S. discipline system. Parents will
be informed if this occurs
Students who fail to complete
the assignments at an adequate standard, will be required
to do this work on period 6 the following Friday
If copying from another
students work is detected, any of the above sanctions may
apply
Guidelines for Parents
Parents and caregivers can help
by:
Taking an active interest in
homework
Ensuring there is time set
aside for homework
Encouraging and supporting
students to complete homework
Providing, where possible, a
dedicated place for homework and study
Assisting teachers to monitor
homework by signing completed work if requested and being
aware of the amount of homework set
Alerting the school to any
domestic or extra-curricular activities which may need to
be taken into consideration when homework is being set or
marked.
